Melbourne is a great place, home to many great sporting events and probably the hospitality capital of Australia, if not the world. The city by the Yarra River is all about service, outstanding food and a great nightlife. I fell in love with the food, became a coffee lover and I've never eaten so well in my life.
If you are looking for all those things, the Langham Melbourne is the best place to experience everything Melbourne has to offer. It is the number one Melbourne hotel on TripAdvisor and a place that goes the extra mile for you! It offers an outstanding service to its guests, has a perfect location and one of the greatest views you can have of Victoria's capital. Let me introduce one of the best hotels in Melbourne to you and let me tell you why.
- The Langham Hotel in Melbourne -
As I've already mentioned above the Langham Melbourne was voted the number one hotel in Melbourne in 2013 by TripAdvisor, a huge accomplishment. The first Langham Hotel opened in 1865 in London and there are a number of properties located around the world in locations such as Los Angeles, Hong Kong or Auckland. It is a 5 star luxury hotel with 387 rooms and suites and an icon located just next to the Yarra River.
The hotel is known for its ambitious hotel lobby and great classic style, which is a mix between modernity and a touch of the grand Renaissance. This combination gives it a unique and luxurious feel and appearance. It also offers a gymnasium with a great spa and indoor pool. Another real highlight is the Langham Club Lounge with a dedicated butler service, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city. The rates can vary depending on room types but rates begin from $250 for a standard room. Please let me introduce Melbourne's best hotel.
- The Room -
The first thing I noticed when I entered the room was the really cool wallpaper, it was inspiring and really gave the room a classic and special feel. That's what the Langham Melbourne is all about, a very nice mix of Renaissance furnished with a modern touch. As you proceed further you will encounter a very comfy king-sized bed and you will be welcomed with complimentary sweets upon arrival. Real gold leaf on top of one of the pastries was a real highlight and a special touch.
As we talk about highlights, the winner is the amazing view from the room (make sure you request a River room to enjoy this majestic view). A panorama of the Melbourne skyline greets you and you also overlook the Yarra River, right in the centre of Melbourne. Especially by night I found myself staring at the skyscrapers and I was amazed by all the lights. It's something you shouldn't miss out on.
The marbled bathroom comes with a bathtub, double sinks and a separate shower. The bathroom is something I always get very excited about and it wasn't as spacious as the Four Seasons one in Cairo but regardless, it was still stylish and has everything you need. Don't panic if you left your toothbrush at home because all amenties are nicely supplied in a leather box.
The room has a nice LCD TV and of course all the docking stations for your iPad, iPhone or whatever iDevice you decided to make you join the trip. If you want to spend a little more money I can highly recommend choosing a room with a balcony. You certainly won't regret your decision.
- The Location -
If you come here for one of Melbourne's great sporting events such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Australian Open, AFL, cricket at the MCG, rugby or football I can tell you that everything is literally within walking distance. The same applies for sightseeing. All the great sights are just around the corner. The Eureka Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the southern hemisphere with an amazing observation deck, is just next door. It's also just a 20 minute drive from Melbourne Tullamarine airport.
Bourke Street, the main vein of Melbourne can be easily reached within five minutes. I can also recommend a stroll along the Southbank promenade including a nice coffee break in one of the numerous cafes along the Yarra River. Which city in the world serves the best coffee? It's Melbourne! Among Vienna, Vancouver or Havana, Australia's coffee capital made it into the list, so don't miss out.
If you wanna get more familiar with Victoria's capital and perhaps get great inspiration like watching the thousands of bats conquering the skyline or other great interesting notes, you should check out the my article about 10 awesome facts about Melbourne.

- The Melba Breakfast -
I can honestly say that the Langham Melbourne offers one of the best breakfasts in Melbourne. I couldn't be more impressed by the effort the F&B team and chefs puts into it. The variety is just outstanding. I wish I had a bigger stomach sometimes.
Melba is Langham Melbourne's signature restaurant and is where their buffet breakfast gets served. A great variety of fresh bread rolls, baguettes and croissants with a selections of jams and spreads were present, along with a big range of fresh fruits, cereals, muesli and yoghurt. There was the usual hot breakfast options like bacon, sausages and mushrooms, and a great spread of cold cuts and cheeses. There was even a section dedicated to gluten-free options. They also made sure that they catered well for the growing Asian market with a selection of congee and other Asian breakfast staples.
But the real highlights were the personalised egg and pancake stations where the friendly chefs take your order and cook everything to your liking. And of course, the dessert section with a chocolate fountain, with strawberries and marshmallows to dip in, pure decadence!
- The Langham Hotel Club Lounge -
For a little extra fee or as a frequent guest of the hotel you get to enjoy the Langham Club Lounge. Located on the top level of the property you will find yourself drinking great champagne while enjoying a top view of the Melbourne CBD. It's an amazing asset to the hotel and the only thing that matters there is 'you'. This is literally a place where you won't hear the word "no" from the great staff.
The Langham Club offers a continental breakfast, afternoon tea, pre-dinner drinks and canapes and complimentary internet access for zero charge. The exclusive butler service makes you feel appreciated and adds a nice tone to such a classic hotel. Enjoy a glass of great Australian wine or a Corona beer and have a few snacks. It's a great way to kick off your night out in Melbourne or just a nice place to have a great conversation not worrying about the bill.
In the morning you can come over for a continental breakfast, not as glamorous as the one at the Melba Restaurant, perhaps the light version of it. But still if you are not a breakfast person and you like to eat with a view then this is the perfect place for you.
A few Club Lounge privileges:
- Continental breakfast
- All day coffee and tea + pastries
- Traditional afternoon tea
- Pre-dinner drinks and canapes
- Complimentary broadband and internet service
TripAdvisor says it all and the competition in the hotel industry is quite tough in Melbourne, as all the big chains are present - The Hilton, Marriott, Grand and Park Hyatt, Crown Towers, Westin or Sofitel. But it's the Langham which takes all the glory. I can definitely agree and their key to success is definitely their great service and their dedication. Great rooms with view, perfect location and an outstanding breakfast experience. It was all about the details. From the valet team to the front desk and the F&B staff, everyone is willing to go the extra mile at any time.
The spa is great but a little bit too standardised for a luxury hotel, also the bathrooms are a bit too small in my opinion but apart from that the Langham knows how to satisfiy their guests. It definitely one of the best hotels in Australia and offers a unique experience and everything a guest could ask for.
Thanks for the great time and I really enjoyed my stay. Special thanks to Natalie for the tour.
